Privacy Policy
Obsidian Dynamics Limited · Last updated: 12 October 2026
This policy explains how Obsidian Dynamics Limited ("we", "us") handles personal data for:
- the Folio Engineering Calculator app for Android (
uk.co.obsidiandynamics.calculator); and - our website, obsidiandynamics.co.uk.
1. The short version
- Our apps collect no personal data and send nothing to us. They don't ask for internet access. They have no account, no ads, and no analytics, advertising or crash-reporting tools.
- Everything you enter stays on your phone. You decide whether to share or back it up, and where it goes.
- The apps keep a few simple counters on your phone, such as how many calculations you've made. These counters never leave your phone.
- Google runs Google Play, and gives us statistics about our apps in its developer console. Google handles that data under its own privacy policy.
- If you email us, we use your email to reply to you.
2. Who we are (data controller)

- ICO registration: ZC141175

We aren't required to appoint a Data Protection Officer. Please send any privacy question to the address above.
3. Our apps
App terms of use: /apps/terms.
3.1 What the apps store, and where
Everything the apps hold is stored only on your phone, in the app's private storage:
| App | What it stores on your phone |
|---|---|
| Folio Engineering Calculator | Calculations, history, jobs, saved results, settings and Pro status |
We can't see, access or recover this data. The apps don't ask for internet access, so they can't send it to us or to anyone else. Android's automatic cloud backup is switched off for the app, so this data isn't copied to your Google account by the apps.
Some of what you enter may be personal data about other people, such as names in job or report details. You hold that data on your phone and control it. We never receive it.
3.2 On-device counters
To help us understand whether the apps are useful, each app keeps a small set of counters on your phone. Examples: the app version, how many calculations you've made, how many PDFs you've exported, and whether you've tapped the "Tap if you'd pay" button on a paid feature that isn't available yet.
- The counters are stored only on your phone and are never sent automatically. We can't see them.
- They contain no names, job details or calculation inputs.
- In Settings you can choose to view a plain-text summary of these counters and send it to us yourself, using any app you like. You'll see the exact text before you send it. If you do, we receive what you send and the email address you send it from. Section 4 then applies.
3.3 Files you create, share or back up
The apps can create files: PDFs of calculation records and reports, CSV exports, job files, and backup files.
- Files are only created when you ask for them.
- When you share or save a file, you choose where it goes, using Android's share sheet or file picker. That might be your email app, a messaging app, a cloud drive or your phone's storage. Once a file leaves the app, the privacy terms of whoever receives or stores it apply. We don't receive it.
- A backup is a file that you save and control. You choose where it's stored, and we never receive it. Backup files aren't encrypted by the app, so keep them somewhere secure and treat them like the paperwork they contain.
- Restoring a backup reads only the file you pick.
3.4 Purchases
While the apps are in testing, no payment is taken. Paid features show "Not available yet — no payment taken."
When paid unlocks become available, they'll be sold through Google Play's billing system. Google takes your payment and holds your payment details. We never see your card or bank details. Google tells us an order was made and gives us its details, such as an order number, the product, the date, the price and the country. We use this to support refunds and purchase problems, and to keep the financial records the law requires. The app confirms your unlock with Google Play on your phone.
3.5 Google Play and the statistics Google gives us
You download our apps from Google Play, which Google runs under its own terms and privacy policy (policies.google.com/privacy). Google gives developers statistics in the Google Play Console. These include installs and uninstalls, countries, device types and Android versions, ratings and reviews, store listing visits, and Android vitals, meaning crash and "app not responding" reports.
These reports come from Google's systems, not from code in our apps, and they're mostly aggregated. Crash reports can include technical details such as the device model, the Android version and the point in the app where it failed. We use this information to fix problems and improve the apps, which is our legitimate interest. Google decides what it collects for Google Play. You can manage some of it in your Google account and Android settings.
If you leave a review on Google Play, your public review and Google Play name are visible to us and to everyone else. We may reply to it publicly.
3.6 Links out of the app
The app may open our privacy policy or an email to our support address in other apps.
3.7 Children
Our apps are designed for adults working in business or engineering. They aren't intended for children, and we don't knowingly receive children's data.
4. If you contact us
If you email apps@obsidiandynamics.co.uk, we receive your email address, your message, and anything you attach or paste in.
- Why: to reply to you, fix problems, handle refund or purchase queries, and improve the apps.
- Lawful basis: our legitimate interests in supporting our users and running our business. Where your message is about a purchase, it's also needed to perform our contract with you.
- How long: we keep support emails for up to 24 months after our last exchange, then delete them, unless we have to keep them longer for a legal claim or for accounting records.
- Who else sees it: only our email provider, Google Workspace (Google), which stores and processes the email for us as our service provider. Google may process this data outside the UK. Where it does, the transfer is protected by appropriate safeguards, such as UK adequacy regulations or the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU standard contractual clauses.
5. Our website
When you visit obsidiandynamics.co.uk or contact us through it:
- Contact details you submit through a form or by email are used to respond to your enquiry. Lawful basis: legitimate interests, or steps before a contract at your request.
- Technical logs needed to run and secure the site, such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested, are processed by our hosting provider on our behalf. Lawful basis: legitimate interests in running a secure website.
- Cookies: we use essential cookies to run the site. We use limited analytics on the public website only with your consent. You can control non-essential cookies through your browser settings.
- We don't sell personal data, and we don't use it to build advertising profiles.
6. Sharing
We don't sell or rent personal data, and we don't share it for advertising. We only share the limited data described in sections 4 and 5 with service providers acting for us (email and website hosting), with professional advisers where needed, or where the law requires it.
7. Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to access, correct, delete or restrict the use of your personal data. You can also object to its use, and ask for a copy in a portable form. Email apps@obsidiandynamics.co.uk to use any of these rights. We'll reply within one month.
For data held in the apps, you're in control on your own phone: you can edit or delete records in the app, or delete all of it by clearing the app's storage or uninstalling the app. Because we never receive that data, we can't access, correct or delete it for you.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, please tell us first. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO): ico.org.uk, 0303 123 1113.
8. Security
The apps keep data in app-private storage on your phone, and the data doesn't travel over a network. Protect your phone with a screen lock, and keep exported files and backups somewhere secure. We protect support emails with access controls on our business accounts.
9. Changes to this policy
If our apps or this policy change, for example if an app starts needing internet access, we'll update this page and the "Last updated" date before the change takes effect. We'll also update our Google Play Data safety answers to match.
